Baghdad Burning Blog

in

Just wanted to alert readers to Baghdad Burning, a regularly updated blog purported written by a 25-year-old Iraqi woman in Baghdad. The writing is thoughtful elaboration of the situation for local Iraqis on the ground, with the latest  reports dealing with the Rape of Sabrine. (By the way, Aljazeera is reporting a second rape as well.)

The writing from Baghdad Burning has also been collected in a short book. See below:

Antonio Mari: New Website Launched

Brazilian photojournalist Antonio Mari has launched a new website featuring his work. He'd be interested in any feedback to help fine-tune it. Mari has spent much of the last decade documenting the Brazilian Amazon rainforest, from the encroachment of oil drilling there to the destruction of the Yanomami Indians way of life. Cuban Invasion?

in

I have no idea as to the veracity of this "news" but there are continuing reports out of Miami that anti-Castro rebels may have landed in Cuba with the help of elements in the military. WarShooter contributor Gabriel is noting the rumor on his blog, Dos Epocas, adding that "several Miami-area radio stations that anti-government rebels aligned with the group Commandos F-4 have landed on the island of Cuba, near Villa Clara." Check his site for updates.

The photo by Getty shooter Spencer Platt "shows a group of young Lebanese driving through a South Beirut neighborhood devastated by Israeli bombings. The picture was taken on 15 August 2006, the first day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah when thousands of Lebanese started returning to their homes." World Press Photo jury chair Michele McNally describes the winning image: "It's a picture you can keep looking at. It has the complexity and contradiction of real life, amidst chaos. This photograph makes you look beyond the obvious."

Gary Knight: Darfur, War Without End

The following series on the unabated genocide of the people of Darfur is by award-winning VII photographer Gary Knight. As he so eloquently notes, the world still sits -- watching, fiddling -- as the heart of Darfur bleeds away.
