Another story note, possibly worth a pitch to a photo editor. I noticed that Paul Rusesabagina (of Hotel Rwanda fame) has a foundation now working to deal with the results of the genocide there, particularly the approximately 500,000 orphans it created. The organization notes that this is believed to be the highest number of orphans in one country anywhere in the world. So you have a country where much of daily life, family life, is in the hands of half-a-million orphans living on the edge of society, just ten years after about 800,000 of its citizens were killed. Anyway may be worth a look.
Here are a few other charities working in the region who may have other contacts:
- American Jewish World Service
- CARE
- Compassion International
- Concern Worldwide US
- Grameen Foundation USA
- Medical Ministry International
- Women for Women International
- World Vision
and... we, of course, have the Sudan connection.... different situation but how will this genocide track Rwanda's in end result?
Here's a clip from IPS which might be useful to mine for other sources. RIGHTS: Sudan Genocide Echoes Rwanda, Experts Say
